The coast Radio Station “Varna-Radio” provides radio-communication services in compliance with the functional requirements of the Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), as Republic of Bulgaria is in force of an International Treaty:

Sea Area A1:

  • Distress alerts and "ship-to-shore" and "shore-to-ship" on VHF for Digital Selective Calling – DSC on Channel 70th and radiotelephony on Channel 16th;
  • “Search and Rescue (SAR)” alerts on VHF Channel 16th for radiotelephony and working VHF channels;
  • Upon existing possibility - transmitting and receiving, as well as co-ordinating “distress on-scene” radio-communications on VHF Channel 16th for radiotelephony;
  • Broadcasting maritime safety information on VHF Channel 16th and VHF Channel 26th for radiotelephony, after DSC calling on VHF Channel 70th.
  • General communication on VHF working channels for radiotelephony, after routine calling on DSC on VHF Channel 70th - automatically or by operator and by keeping a continuous radio watch on VHF calling channel 16th and VHF working channels 26th and 28th .
  • Broadcasting on schedule of "traffic list" on VHF Channel 26th.

Sea Area A2:

  • Distress alerts "ship-to-shore" and "shore-to-ship" on MF for Digital Selective Calling – DSC on distress frequency 2187,5 kHz and following radio-communication on an associated distress frequency 2182 kHz for radiotelephony;
  • “Search and Rescue (SAR)” alerts on MF on an associated distress frequency 2182 kHz for radiotelephony and on working channel for MF on 3740 kHz / 4115,7 kHz for radiotelephony;
  • Upon existing possibility - transmitting and receiving, as well as co-ordinating “distress on-scene” radio-communications on MF on 2182 kHz for radiotelephony;
  • Broadcasting maritime safety information on MF on 2182 kHz for radiotelephony, and on working channel for MF on 3740 kHz, after DSC calling on 2187,5 kHz;
  • General communications on working MF channel on 3740 kHz/ 4115,7 kHz, after a routine calling by operator on DSC National MF channel on 1621,5 kHz / 2156,5 kHz and by keeping a continuous radio watch on working MF channel 3740 kHz / 4115,7 kHz.
  • Broadcasting of "traffic list" on 3740 kHz on schedule.

NAVTEX.

Broadcasting maritime safety information on 518 kHz, covering the central west area of Black Sea - the Region “Juliett", zone of navigation III. The National coordinators are the sources of the information, as follows:

  • Broadcasting hydro-meteorological information from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology - Varna branch
  • Broadcasting navigational warnings from the Hydrographic Service of the Bulgarian Navy
  • Broadcasting distress alerts and search and rescue co-ordinating communications from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre Varna
  • Broadcasting maritime safety information (navigational warnings and hydro-meteorological information) on behalf of Romania on 518 kHz during the Republic of Bulgaria transmissions.
  • Keeping a continuous radio watch on VHF Channel 10th, participating in and co-ordinating the radio communications for the safety of shipping and in cases of distress and urgency with small vessels and boats (navigating near the coastal area and not carrying on board any GMDSS equipment, as it is not recommended by GMDSS convention).
